A conversation: Keller, Piper, Carson (pt II)

18 November 2009

..A continuation of the conversation between Tim Keller, John Piper and Carson;  and ten minutes of your time well spent.

For the first few minutes, they talk about the motivation behind ministries of mercy, and the inadequacy of measuring the success of such ministries on the basis of conversions alone.   That conversation runs out of gas, and then Keller changes the subject to what he looks for when he is hiring a pastor.  Apparently, a candidate can be sound doctrinally, but not have either a sense of moral seriousness, or a joy about the Gospel – as Keller says, “..the Gospel Penny hasn’t dropped.”

Keller also mentions that these qualities can neither be discerned from reading a resume nor from the interview itself.

Lastly, he (i.e., Keller, of course – the other guys seem to be as mesmerized by him as I myself) mentions a resource that the PCA has for church planting;  something I would be interested in looking at sometime.  I have heard of a similar resource within TEC (orthodox, to my understanding) that is bearing fruit, and of course I would like to look at this sometime as well.

Fascinating stuff !
